The Painter’s Pole Showdown

The good, the bad, and the ugly

There are a lot of Painter’s poles in the world and they have provided a great way to paint a little higher up the wall for many years.  Almost all hardware stores and home centers sell them and they are relatively low cost.   Along comes the ClickSnap Painter’s pole adapter.  We can now use these handy and low-cost poles to extend our cameras, video cameras, GoPro cameras, microphones and accessories up into the air.  

This is a great way to shoot aerial shots, home inspections, event photography, underwater photography and so much more.    Sounds great, right?  Step one is choosing either our Standard Painter’s Pole Adapter or the Ball Head Painter’s pole adapter.  Both thread onto most Painter’s poles and provide a standard ¼-20 threaded stud at the top.  The stud is what screws into the tripod hole on most cameras and accessories.  If you are using a regular camera or video camera you should be all set. 

For a little more flexibility, you might want to add a ball head or an accessory adapter.  Most small ball heads will also have the ¼-20 thread and the larger ball head will have a 3/8-16 thread.  You can get one of our thread adapters if you need to use a larger ball head on your ClickSnap adapter.  If you are using a GoPro they make a nice little adapter mount that threads on to the Painter’s pole adapters and attaches to the GoPro.  Finally, if you are using a smartphone like an iPhone or Android phone there are a large variety of mounts that also thread on to our adapters and holds your phone.  

Because there is a lot of variation in pole and thread manufacturing, our adapters work better on the recommended poles.  Please review the info below prior to purchasing a pole.  Thanks

Pole selection:

Our two favorite poles are the Mr. Longarm and the Wooster Sherlock.  Both are rigid easy to use and well made in the USA. 

Recommended poles:

Mr. Longarm – Made in the USA

All their poles have a really nice twist lock design and removes any play and noise in the pole.  This is especially nice if you are shooting video or recording audio.  These are well made and very easy to find online or at Home Depot, Lowes or most hardware stores.

Wooster Sherlock – Made in the USA

These are quality poles and very rigid.  You can adjust them in increments of 6”.   They can be found at most home centers like Home Depot and Lowes.  The one drawback on these is there is a small amount of play between the pole and lock mechanism.   Please see below for part numbers and links.

Jiffyloc – Made in the USA

These poles are very similar to the Wooster poles and are well made.  They are not as common but a great choice if you can find them.

Shue-Line – There mechanism is very cool and fits into a compact space.  The mechanism is very cool however there is a little wobble with the longer poles.  

Earth Friendly – 4” Bamboo Pole

This is a wood pole and non-extending.  It is made from bamboo and is very solid.  It is also very low cost and can be found at Lowes.  These types of poles are great if you are taking a GoPro or small underwater camera with you diving or snorkeling.  It allows you to put your camera right next to fish with our scaring them.  You can get some great underwater selfies too.

NOT recommended poles:

 Purdy – Power Lock

Purdy makes some nice painters tools however they have moved away from the standard Painter's Pole thread and do not work with our adapters. 

However, if you get there adapter you can use these poles and they are very nice.  The following link is the adapter.
